Abstract

169,396. Miller, J. A. Nov. 8, 1920. Variable-speed gearing.-A two-speed gear of eccentric type is used as auxiliary to a main change-speed gear. The tail-shaft of say a motorvehicle is divided into two parts 1, 2. A toothed pinion 3 secured to the driven shaft 2 is constantly in mesh with an internal gear 12<a> upon a drum 9 rotatably loosely in fixed bearings. A double clutch head 4 slides on feathers on the shaft 1. When the shaft 1 is moved eccentric to the drum 9 and the head 4 is engaged with the pinion 3, as shown .in Figs. 1 and 2, a direct or clutch drive is produced. On moving the shaft 1 to a concentric position and engaging the head with clutch teeth 12 inside the drum 9, a geared drive at increased speed is effected.
