Abstract

588,460. Motor cycles. AERO ENGINES, Ltd., and HALLIDAY, G. F. Feb. 19, 1945, No. 4164. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iii)] Driving mechanism for a motor cycle comprises an engine with its axis parallel to the longitudinal axis of the motor cycle, a gearbox, a reduction gearing between the crankshaft and the input member of the gear box and a chain drive between the power output member of the gear box and the rear wheel. The reduction gear may be housed within the gear box. In Fig. 2 the crankshaft 22 drives the bevel wheel 26 of a reduction gear 26, 27 through a clutch 23, the bevel 27 being mounted on the output shaft 29, the final drive being by a chain and sprockets to the rear wheel 11. The bevel 27, Fig. 3, has a pinion 34 formed with it and an element of a dog clutch 35 and rotates as a unit on the shaft 29. A lay shaft 33, parallel with shaft 29, has a pinion 36 formed integral with it and is in constant mesh with pinion 34. Gear changes are made by sliding the pinion-dog clutch 37, 38 on the splines 39 of the shaft 29. An alternative form of right angle drive reduction gear may comprise a worm and worm wheel.
