Abstract

1,143,080. Engine/transmission units. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. 19 Jan., 1968 [19 Dec., 1966; 1 Feb., 1967], Nos. 56630/66 and 4926/67. Heading B7H. [Also in Divisions F1 and F2] A variable ratio gear-box 11, situated below the level of the crank-shaft, is driven through a drive take-up device 5 and gearing 16, and drives a differential 8 through hypoid bevel gearing 10, 9, the common axis 12 of the input and output shafts 13, 14, of the gear-box 11 converging towards the crank-shaft axis and passing above the axis 15 of the differential 8. The drive take-up device may be a manually controlled clutch, a centrifugal clutch or, as shown, an hydraulic torque converter comprising an impeller 4 driven by the crank-shaft and a turbine 6 mounted on a shaft 7 which transmit the drive to the input shaft 13 through tapered spur gears 17, 21, 19. The gear-box 11 may be an automatic type as described in Specification 931,877. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the shaft 13 is driven through a chain gear (29), the sprocket 24 of which is driven from shaft 7 through a constant velocity universal joint; such a joint may also be used with straight spur gearing.
