Abstract

1,037,429. Variable-ratio gearing. MAYBACH-MOTORENBAU G.m.b.H. Aug. 21, 1963 [Aug. 23, 1962], No. 33157/63. Heading F2D. A hydromechanical variable-ratio gear corn prises hydrodynamic torque converters 14, 16 connected in parallel and preceding a constantmesh spur gearing providing two forward and two reverse ratios. The common turbine shaft of the torque converters, which forms the input shaft of the spur gearing, can be braked by a hydrodynamic brake 44 to facilitate changing the ratio of the spur gearing. The transmission is particularly intended for diesel railway locomotives, the engine driving a shaft 10 geared to a shaft 13 driving the impellers of the converters 14, 16, the turbines of which are fast on a shaft 20 carrying the rotor 47 of the hydrodynamic brake 44. For the lowest speed range converter 14 is filled and converter 16 empty and drive is transmitted from the turbine shaft 20 through gears 22, 23, an engaged clutch 34, 35, gears 28, 27, an engaged clutch 42, 38 and gears 29, 31, 33 to a final output shaft 32. A second speed range is obtained by emptying converter 14 and filling converter 16, the ratio of the spur gearing being unchanged. To obtain third speed range, converter 14 is filled and converter 16 emptied, and clutch 34, 35 is disengaged and a clutch 36, 37 engaged so that the drive is transmitted from the shaft 20 through the engaged clutches 36, 37 and 42, 38 and through gears 29, 31, 33 to the output shaft. During this shift the hydrodynamic brake 44 is filled to slow the shaft 20 to facilitate engagement of the clutch 36, 37. All the clutches may be of a baulked dog type described in Specification 683,503. The top speed range is obtained on emptying converter 14 and filling converter 16. In a modification the converter 16 may be replaced by a hydrodynamic coupling. For reverse speeds clutch 38, 42 is disengaged and a clutch 39, 43 is engaged to clutch a gear 30 to the gear 28, the gear 30 meshing the gear 31 so that various speed ranges can be obtained by selectively filling converters 14, 16 and selectively engaging clutches 34, 35 and 36, 37.
