Abstract

1,208,831. Hydro-mechanical variable-ratio epicyclic gear; variable-ratio gear and clutch combination. VOITH GETRIEBE K.G. 9 Feb., 1968 [25 Feb., 1967], No. 6618/68. Heading F2D. An hydromechanical variable-ratio epicyolic gear, particularly for a power station boiler feed pump drive, comprises a sun-ring train, two elements of which are connected to input and output respectively, and a third of which is connected to input via an hydrodynamic torque converter, the output speed of which is variable by adjustment of variable angle reactor blades. As shown, a driving engine shaft is connected to a ring 7 through a scoop-controlled fluid coupling 4, bridgable by a friction clutch 3, and a shaft 5. The latter also is connected to drive a carrier 10 through a gear train 12-14, a torque converter 16, and a gear train 21, 22. The torque converter is flange-mounted on a gear casing 25. The torque converter turbine 18 and hence the carrier 10 are one-way detained at 24 to provide a basic speed at which, to improve efficiency, the reactor blades are closed or the converter is emptied. Overdrive, above the basic speed, is by operation of the torque converter, the clutch 3 being advantageously engaged to bridge the fluid coupling 4. Speeds below basic are obtained by regulation of the fluid coupling scoop pipe 26. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the carrier 10 is driven through one of two selectively fillable torque converters to provide two ranges. The torque converters may be designed for differing output speed or power ranges, and/or followed by differing gear trains. In Fig. 4 (not shown), wherein the fluid coupling is dispensed with and speed regulation is obtained for overdrive above basic speed only, the carrier and sun are respectively input and output connected and the ring is connected to input via a variable output speed torque converter. A friction band-brake on the ring is applied for basic speed.
