[Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XXIX] A power-transmission system comprises a hydraulic torque converter with each of its three parts connected to an element of an epicyclic train, so that during forward drive the converter elements move in the same direction. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the driving shaft D is connected to the converter element A and the sun-wheel E, the element B to the planet carrier F, and the element C through a freewheel G to the annulus H on the driven shaft M. An alternative arrangement is shown in Fig. 6. The torque converter may be of ordinary construction, or may comprise triangular vanes, the radial impeller vanes 12, Fig. 1, being flat, the turbine vanes 15 being concave, and the reaction vanes 2 being tangential to the central axis and flat in form with a forwardly turned edge 6. Each turbine vane is thick at its base and becomes progressively thinner towards its apex.
