Abstract

758,516. Change-speed gearing. HINDMARCH, T. Jan. 27, 1954 [Feb. 3, 1953], No. 3004/53. Class 80(2) Change-speed gearing for locomotives, railcars, road vehicles, rolling mills, machine tools, &c., comprises a continuously variable torque converter, Fig. 2, driving a shaft A, Fig. 1, carrying pinions B<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>2</SP>, B<SP>3</SP> clutchable thereto by fluid pressure operated friction clutches mounted within them and pinions C', C', C<SP>3</SP> on an output shaft D. The pinions C<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>2</SP> are mounted on the shaft D by means of freewheels and the pinion C<SP>3</SP> is fast thereon. The output shaft D forms the input shaft of a second, similar change-speed gear having an output shaft G which may either drive directly or through a reverse gear (not shown). The second change-speed gear has a fixed pinion E<SP>1</SP> and a freewheel in the smallest output pinion F<SP>3</SP>, so that overrunning is permitted, e.g. when the gear is used in a road vehicle. The two change-speed gears in series shown give nine ratios, but other combinations, e.g. of a two ratio gear in series with a two ratio gear to give four ratios &c., may be employed. Automatic speed or torque responsive means may be used to control the gear. The torque converter consists of an input shaft 1 carrying planet gears 3 meshing a sun gear 6 and a driven annulus 4 on an output shaft 5, the sun gear 6 driving a three or more element hydrokinetic torque converter 9 through a gear train 7, 8, the hydrokinetic torque converter itself driving the annulus and output shaft through a gear train 10, 11. By arranging for the torque converter to have a speed range slightly greater than the change in ratio between successive stages in the changespeed gear, the torque variations from ratio to ratio are smoothed out. According to the Provisional Specification, the torque converter can be used without the changespeed gear and, vice versa, the changespeed gear can be used without the torque converter. In the latter case, a separate isolating clutch is used, instead of the friction clutch provided within the pinion B'.
