In order to enable the gear ratios of a machine-tool drive to be extended beyond their normal range, the normal gear ratios are provided by a main change-speed gearing in a housing 14 on which a secondary housing 54 containing a secondary gear train is adapted to be mounted when required, input 56 and output 59 gears of the secondary train extending through an opening 52 in the main housing 14 and meshing gears of the main gearing. An electric motor 12 drives an input shaft 17 fast with a gear 18 in constant mesh with a gear 21 on a shaft 22, the gear 18 having clutch teeth engageable with teeth 28 on a slidable gear 24 splined to a shaft 20 to directly drive the shaft 20, and slidable along shaft 20 into mesh with a gear 26 on the shaft 22 to driveshaft 20 through gears 18, 21, 26, 24. Shaft 20 drives an output shaft 10 through trains of axially-slidable stepped gears to give twelve speed ratios; when the secondary housing is attached to the main housing, gear 56 meshes gear 26, and gear 24 is slidable along shaft 20 into engagement with the gear 59 so that shaft 20 is driven through gears 18, 21, 26, 56, 57, 58, 59, 24 to give an additional six ratios.
