Abstract
191,268. Withers, J. S., (Perfecto Gear Differential Co.). Dec. 19, 1921. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing.-Two-speed epicyclic gearing of the kind described in Specification 172,503, is combined with a non-epicyclic gear train whereby a reverse and a lower forward speed are obtained through driving the sun-wheel of the epicyclic train in a reverse direction to that of the driving ring-gear. The original epicyclic train comprises the ring-gear 12, planet-pinions 11 carried on pins 10 fixed to the differential casing 7, and a sun-wheel 22. The sun-wheel is fixed on a sliding sleeve 23 carrying a gear-wheel 25, and two speeds are obtained by sliding the sleeve until (a) the sun-wheel engages with teeth 27 on the planet-carrier and so locks the train for a direct drive, and (b) the gear-wheel 25 engages fixed teeth 26 and locks the sun-wheel for a slow forward speed. According to the present invention, the driving gear member 13 carries a second toothed ring 31 which is always engaged by a gear-wheel 32 sliding on a stationary shaft 34. For a reverse drive the sleeve 23 is moved to the position shown, and the gear-wheel 32 is brought into engagement with the gear-wheel 25, which is then driven in the opposite direction to the driving member 13. As the gear-wheel 25 is smaller than the sun-wheel 22, the latter is driven at a. greater peripheral speed than that of the ring- gear 12 and in the opposite direction, so that the planet-carrier is given a reversed drive. For addition low forward speed the gear-wheel 32 is moved to the left until a pinion 35 integral therewith gears with a wheel 36 on the sleeve 23 and drives the sun-wheel 22 also in the reverse-direction but at a slower peripheral speed than that of the ring-gear 12.
