Abstract
169,463. Castel de Courval, G. Sept. 24,1920, [Convention date]. Variable - s p e e d gearing comprises an epicyclic train controlled by a friction cone coacting with a movable roller or pinion. A friction cone 8, Fig. 2, is splined on a driving- shaft 9, which drives through bevel-gearing 23, Fig. 3, the carrier 22 of planet pinions 21. The annulus 20 of the epicyclic train is geared through a jointed shaft 18 to a spline shaft 16 upon which the movable roller 15 slides under the control of, say, the driver of a vehicle. A sun gear 27 is the driven element, and this may be connected through a balance gear 26 to a divided axle 25. When the roller 15 is near the small end of the cone 8, the element 27 is driven at top speed. In the configuration shown, the element 27 is hardly driven at all. When the roller 15 is opposite a gap 14 in the cone, the drive ceases. The drive may be stopped at any time by sliding the cone on its shaft towards its thick end. When the roller 15 engages an ,extension 28 of the cone, the element 27 is driven reversely. In a, modification, the planet-carrier is geared to the roller spindle, so that some of the actual drive passes through the roller. In a modification-shown in Fig. 6, the shifting of the roller is done by the power of the engine, the spindle 16 being tilted to one side or the other to bring it about. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also an arrangement with toothed gearing instead of the friction gearing. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
