Abstract

181,310. Castel de Courval, G. June 6, 1921, [Convention date]. Addition to 169,463. Variable - speed gearing. - The invention described in the parent Specification comprises an epicyclic train controlled bv a cone and roller variable gear, drive being possible only when the roller is in engagement with its cone. According to this invention, driving and driven shafts 9, 45, Fig. 1, are in alignment, and a portion 8<1>, Fig. 4, of the cone 8 may be connected by a pawl 54 to the shaft 9 so as to overrun when, say, the engine upon a vehicle fitted with the gear stops. The cone 8 is wholly or in part splined to the shaft 9 to which is secured the carrier 40, Fig. 1, of planet pinions 41. The pinions 41 mesh with a gear 44 secured to the tail shaft 45, and with a gear 43 connected by a sleeve loose on the shaft 9 to a gear 46. The gear 46 is entrained with a number of shafts 16, 16<1> upon which the rollers 15, 15<1> are splined and adapted to be moved in unison to vary the speed. When the rollers reach a gap 14 in the cone 8, the drive is reduced to zero. The drive may be stopped at any time by sliding the cone in the direction of its thick end.
