Abstract

202,673. Jett, G. C. April 19, 1922. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing for motor vehicles. A main transmission shaft 16 is driven from the engine fly-wheel 11 through an expanding clutch 39, and drives a gear wheel 22 carrying independent pairs of planet pinions 26, 27. The pinions 26 engage wheels 33 fixed on sleeves carrying the final driven sprockets 18, and the pinions 27 engage wheels 30 fixed to worm-wheels 29 held or driven by two auxiliary shafts 17. These auxiliary shafts are independently driven from the fly-wheel 11 by means of friction rollers 54 carried in eccentric bearings in which they can be moved to engage either of the driving surfaces 37, 38 so that the shafts 17 may be driven in either direction. By driving through either or both of the shafts 16, 17 of one train the sprocket 18 may be driven at three forward speeds and a reverse. The clutch 39 and a sliding brake cone 42 drive or hold fast the shaft 16. The trains are in duplicate so that a vehicle can be manoeuvred. The eccentric bearings controlling the drive of the shafts 17 are respectively operated by hand-wheels 58, 59.
