Abstract

144,380. Beauvais, C. F. March 10, 1919. Change-speed and reversing gearing. - Comprises continuously - variable friction gearing in which the engineshaft 2 carries a cone 1 adapted to be moved angularly about a self-alining bearing 6 to engage a roller 16 slidably keyed on a shaft 10 which drives a transverse shaft 20 through reversing bevel gearing 18. The back axle 29 is driven from the shaft 20 by side belts or chains 27. The small end of the cone is recessed at 30 to give a " free-engine " position for the roller. The bearing at the rear end of the cone-shaft 2 is carried by a plate 36 which is moved up and down to engage and disengage the gear by rollers 35 running on inclined faces of the plate. The rollers are carried 'by levers 33 drawn together by an adjustable spring 37 and separated by links 38 operated by the driver.
