Abstract

209,837. Lanchester, F. W. Oct. 19, 1922. Variable - speed friction gearing for motor vehicles comprises a driven drum D which is moved in its own plane into engagement with one of a number of driving friction pulleys E, F, G which are advanced selectively. The pulley E driven directly by the engine yields the high speed. Pulley F driven by a chain K from the pulley E vields the low forward speed. Pulley G driven. by a spur pair from the pulley F effects reversed driving. The pulleys F, G are supported in a rocking frame H<1> operated by a lever H<2>. The drum D is moved into driving engagement or into engagement with a brake surface L by an eccentric mount C' operated through a lever C<2> from a pedal. A double arrangement for driving road wheels independently is shown in Fig. 6.
