Abstract

303,198. Matthews, A. Sept. 29, 1927. Change-speed gearing; spring drives.-Trans mission mechanism for motor vehicles comprises the combination of an epicyclic variable gear hav ing a brake which may allow variable slip, with a spring drive for transmitting the drive from the driven member of the variable gear to the road wheels. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, a planet carrier 19, mounted freely on the driving shaft A, has planet pinions 2, 4 gearing respec tively with a driving wheel 1 and a driven whee 5, the latter being fixed on a shaft 18 driving the road wheels through a spring 14, a reversing gear 13, and a shaft B. The planet carrier is con trolled by a brake 21, and direct drive is provide( by means of a clutch C, the brake and clutch being controlled by a single lever. One end o the spring or springs is secured to the shaft 18 and the other end to a drum 7 forming the driving member of the reversing gear. The spring shaft 18 is formed as a sleeve on the driving shaft A. In a modification, the planet carrier is extended to form a, casing enclosing the spring drum 7.
