Abstract

418,777. Controlling variable-speed gearing and friction clutches. REO MOTOR CAR CO., 1331, South Washington Avenue, Lansing, Michigan, U.S.A. Aug. 18, 1933, No. 23117. Convention date, Jan. 30. [Class 80 (ii).] In two-speed epicyclic gearing in which the higher speed is effected by engaging a friction clutch H by means of centrifugal weighted levers J, the weighted levers J are carried on the driven gear member such as D and their weighted ends co-operate with yieldable catches O. In the low-speed position of Fig. 1, the clutch H is open and the levers J are held in their collapsed position by a spring ball O within each weight engaging a recess N<2> in a pin N which passes radially and loosely through the weight. A sun pinion B fast on a driving-shaft A then drives the internally-toothed driven gear D at reduced speed through an internally and externally toothed planet ring E supported eccentrically on a carrier F which is prevented in this speed configuration from turning backwards by a one-way roller brake G. When the speed of the driven member D increases beyond a definite amount, the balls O slip out of the recesses N<2> and the weighted levers J fly out to the position shown in Fig. 3. Thus a clean-cut change into high speed or solid drive is effected, T-ends K<1> on the levers J thrusting the plates of the clutch H into driving engagement so that the carrier F is forced to turn forwardly along with an enveloping clutch drum I which is rigid with the driven gear member D.
