676,560. Change-speed and reversing gearing. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. Feb. 22, 1950 [Feb. 22, 1949], No. 4610/50. Class 80 (ii).. In transmission gearing for motor vehicles wherein parallel drive branches 1, 2, 4, 5 and 1, 6, 8, 5, Fig. 1, of different gear ratios and including oppositelyacting one-way clutches F and G, are provided between a reversing gear R and the cardan shaft B so that, with forward gear engaged, the clutch G over-runs when the engine drives the vehicle and clutch F over-runs when the vehicle drives the engine, the two drive branches include normally-closed friction or dog clutches E<SP>1</SP>, E<SP>2</SP> and normally-open locking devices S<SP>1</SP>, S<SP>2</SP> for the one-way clutches F, G, by manipulation of which jamming of the gear may be prevented when the vehicle is driven in reverse or tends to roll backwards. Thus, with reverse gear engaged, clutch E' is. opened (or clutch E<SP>2</SP> is opened and looking device S<SP>1</SP>.closed) if the engine is driving the vehicle., and clutch E<SP>2</SP> is opened (or clutch E<SP>1</SP> is opened and locking device S<SP>2</SP> closed) if the vehicle is driving the engine. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 5, clutches 13 and E' are closed for direct drive from engine shaft A through clutch 13 to intermediate shaft 12, thence through clutch E' and one-way clutch F to shaft B. If the vehicle over-runs, drive is from shaft B via gears 11, layshaft 10, gears 14, 15, one-way clutch. G, shaft 12 and clutch 13 to shaft A. For overdrive, locking device S' for clutch G is closed and E' opened, drive from shaft A being through 13, 12, S', 15, 14, 10, 11 to shaft B. Drive in first, second and reverse gears is through the lay-shaft 10, clutches E<SP>1</SP> and 13 being open. In the arrangement of Fig. 6, oneway clutch F is in the layshaft 10 while oneway clutch G is connected directly between shafts A and B. When reverse gear is engaged (as shown), the locking device S' for clutch F is closed. The clutches E', E' and locking devices S<SP>1</SP>, S<SP>2</SP> may be operated automatically in dependence on the direction of rotation of the drive or on the engagement of the reverse gear.
