[Class 80 (ii).] Change-speed gearing for vehicles comprises a high-speed direct drive without a freewheel and another high-speed drive through silent helical gearing with a freewheel, and change between these drives to eliminate or bring in the freewheel can be effected noiselessly without declutching by throwing over a pair of clutches 11, 14 with rejecting teeth. During this throw over a clutch 10 must be engaged which connects a driving-shaft 1 with a sleeve 3 loose on a driven shaft 2. The clutch 11 is splined on the sleeve 3 and, in direct drive, this clutch engages a clutch 12 fast on the shaft 2. When the alternative clutch 14 is engaged, the drive passes through a helical pair 5, a countershaft 4, and clutch members 14, 18 to the boss 20 of the freewheel, and through one-way grip rollers 25 and a helical wheel 9 to a like pinion 8 fast on the shaft 2, the train being preferably sized to yield an overdrive. Lower speeds are effected through sliding spur pairs 6, 7. The freewheel is housed within the wheel 9 to diminish overall length.
