369,998. Variable-speed toothed gearing ; ratchet clutches. WARNER GEAR CO., Muncie, Indiana, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Fishburn, 0. E. ; Muncie, Indiana, U.S.A.) Dec. 22, 1930, No. 38589. Convention date, Jan. 20. [Class 80 (ii).] In variable-speed gearing for automobiles &c. of the type with aligned driving and driven shafts 2, 3 and a parallel countershaft 4, a ratchet clutch 17 connects a hub 14 splined on the driven shaft to a clutch member 20 which by means of clutch teeth 22 engaging teeth 23 effects a direct drive and by clutch teeth 24 engaging teeth 25 effects a lower speed drive, the wheel 10 then connected being normally free on the shaft 3 and driven by a wheel 7 on the shaft 4. Overrunning of the driven shaft at either speed is thus permitted.. Additional clutch teeth such as 36, 37 and 34, 35 may be provided positively connecting the driving and driven shafts or the wheel 10 and the driven shaft at the limits of adjustment of the clutch member 20, so that overrunning becomes no longer possible. The ratchet clutch is preferably of the type in which rollers 17 of increasing diameters are arranged in eccentric recesses in the inner or outer parts, blocks 19 acted on by springs 18 pressing the rollers to clutching position.
