382,170. Variable speed gearing ; claw clutches. FORSTER, A., 61, Bondlerstrasse, Kilchberg, Z³rich, Switzerland. Feb. 17, 1932, No. 4734. Convention date, Feb. 27, 1931. [Class 80 (ii).] Constant-mesh wheels 3, 4, splined on a driven shaft 6 and loose on a countershaft 5 respectively, are caused to move axially together by making their intermeshing teeth arrow-shaped, either pointed, Fig. 8, or curved. The wheels are moved through the wheel 3 to give direct drive with the wheel 3 clutched to the first driving pinion 1, a second speed with the wheel 4 clutched to a rigid countershaft gear 22, and a neutral intermediate position. The wheel 4 slides freely on a boss of a rigid countershaft wheel 2. Lower speeds and reverse are provided by sliding wheels 23, 24. Positive or friction clutching means may be used. Claw clutches.-The clutching element of the wheel 3 is an internal sleeve 7, end teeth 11 of which engage on one side splines on the shaft 6 and on the other radial internal projections 14 in the wheel 3, the sleeve 7 being retained in the wheel by a press-fitted sleeve 15. The clutch teeth 11 mesh with facial teeth on the pinion 1. The sleeve 15, together with the inner ends of the radial projections 14, and the shaft 6 are ground so as to centre the wheel 3 on the splined shaft 6.
