Abstract
426,622. Change-speed gearing. BLAIR, A., and REBBECK, F. E., c /o Harland & Wolff, Ltd., Queen's Island, Belfast. Dec. 13, 1934, No. 35771. [Class 80 (ii)] Change-speed gearing of the kind comprising constantmesh gears and in which the speed changes are effected by electromagnetic friction clutches is driven through an hydraulic coupling or fluid flywheel O. A double electromagnetic clutch G on the driving-shaft B of the gearing is shown outside the gear case, but an arrangement is described with this double clutch between loose driving gears C, D. In the arrangement shown, the gears C, D are driven alternatively through sleeves f, e so as to drive a countershaft H and hence a forward-driven loose gear K at two speeds which are communicated to a driven shaft P through a clutch L, M. A second loose gear J is driven through an idler S reversely also at two speeds which are passed on by an alternative clutch L N. The reversing clutches also may be electromagnetic.
