497,257. Variable - speed gearing. WALLIS, W. H. March 30,1938, No. 10458/37. [Class 80(ii)] A gear-box giving five forward speeds, including an overdrive, and a reverse comprises aligned driving and driven shafts k and t respectively, a slow-speed countershaft x, a highspeed countershaft l, and a reverse countershaft m. A pinion d on the driving shaft k drives the low speed shaft x through a pinion e which drives a pinion n of the reverse shaft m, which in turn drives a pinion s of the high speed shaft l. Loose gears rand p on the layshaft l engage with fixed gears f and h on the driven shaft t and are adapted to be clutched to their shaft by a sliding member v to give two different speeds of the driven shaft, one of these being an overdrive. Similarly the layshaft x has two loose gears also engaging with the gears f and h to give a further two speeds. The fifth speed is a direct drive by means of a sliding clutch member w between the pinion d and the driven shaft t. For reverse a sliding gear splined to the reverse shaft m is moved into engagement with the gear f on the driven shaft or alternatively the gear may be loose and constantly in mesh with the gear f and provided with clutch teeth for sliding into engagement with co-operating teeth on the gear n. Additional wheels may be provided on the countershafts to enable additional speeds to be obtained.
