[Class 80 (ii)] A gear box having co-axial main shafts and a layshaft 17 with selectable alternative gear trains 14, 14a; 15, 15a; 16, 16a, between one main shaft and the layshaft 17 for indirect gear ratios and a single gear train 13, 18, between the layshaft 17 and the other main shaft common' to all said indirect gear ratios, is characterized by a reverse train between the layshaft 17 and said other main shaft alternative to said single gear train so that a reverse indirect ratio is obtainable for each forward indirect ratio. As shown, the gear 18 is slidably splined to the layshaft 17 and is engageable either with the gear 13 on the input shaft or with a gear 21 on a second layshaft 19 having a gear 20 meshing with the gear 13. The gears, 14, 15, 16, which are free on the driven shaft 12 may be clutched thereto by clutch sleeves 10, 11, the sleeve 10 being also engageable with the gear 13 for a direct drive. The sliding pinion 18 may be replaced by .a sliding dog and constant mesh pinions.
