Abstract

562.434. Variable-speed gearing. SELF-CHANGING GEAR CO., Ltd., WILSON, A. G., and MILLER, A. A. July 5, 1943, No. 4242 /44. Divided out of Complete Specification of 559,910. [Class 80 (ii)] Power transmission mechanism comprises two input power units coupled together to drive a single output member through gearing having two epicyclic trains and arranged so that the two power units may be used together or singly and give variable speeds with a reverse. One power unit connected to a shaft k drives a sleeve 35 through gears 33, 34, and the other power unit drives a shaft a. The epicyclic trains 10, 11, have sun-pinions 14, 15, fixed to an intermediate shaft 12. The sun 14 of the train 10 may be clutched to the annulus 23 of that train by a clutch 24, 24a, or be clutched to the shaft a by a clutch 31, 32. The annulus 23 may be clutched to the shaft a bv a clutch 25, 30, or be fixed to a frame by a brake 27, 28. The annulus 19 of the train 11 is connected to the planet carrier of the train 10 by a sleeve 17a, and it may be held fixed by a brake 39, 40, or connected to the gear-wheel 34 by a clutch 36, 37. The output drive to the output shaft 22 is taken from the planet carrier 21 of the train 11 either directly, or through gearing such as the epicyclic gearing shown in dotted lines. When using both motors the clutches 31, 32, and 36, 37, only are engaged. When using the motor connected to the shaft k alone clutches 24, 24a, and 36, 37, are engaged. Another speed ratio using this motor alone is obtained by engaging clutch 36, 37, and brake 27, 28. When using the motor connected to the shaft a alone the clutch 31, 32, and the brake 27, 28, are engaged. A reverse speed with this motor alone is obtained by engaging clutch 25, 30, and brake 39, 40. The mechanism may be used to drive ships' propellers, and may be used in duplicate as described in Specification 559,910.
