Abstract

559,910. Propelling ships &c. SELF-CHANGING GEAR CO., Ltd., WILSON, A. G., and MILLER, A. A. June 3, 1942, No. 7550. [Class 114] [Also in Group XXIV] Two input power units are coupled together to drive a single output member by two epicyclic gear trains arranged so that one gear ratio is obtainable when both input units are used together and various alternative gear ratios are selectively obtainable when either is used singly. As shown two power units E, E', drive a single propeller shaft l<SP>1</SP>. The shaft a of the unit E has a sun pinion b, and a toothed annulus d. The shaft k of unit E<SP>1</SP> has a gear h meshing a gear g which has a toothed annulus f, a gear n<SP>1</SP>, and carries planetary pinions m meshing with the annulus d and with a sun gear o on a freely supported sleeve p. Planet pinions e carried by the driver shaft l<SP>1</SP> mesh with the annulus f and sun b. The proportions of the gears are such that when the two power units revolve at the same speed the sleeve p is stationary. If there is prolonged unbalanced running the sleeve p rotates. The sleeve p may then be held stationary by clutching a gear t to the sleeve p by a clutch s<SP>1</SP>, t<SP>1</SP>, so as to drive through gearing t, u, a reversible oil pump v which operates brake bands r to engage the sleeve p. The pump v can also be driven from the shaft a by clutching a gear y thereto by clutch y<SP>1</SP>. Thus when both power units work together or singly the sleeve p remains or is held substantially stationary. A further speed ratio is obtained when using the power units singly by engaging a clutch member w on the shaft a with the sleeve p whereupon a solid drive results. The clutch member w is actuated by pressure from pump v or a pump n<SP>3</SP> the latter being driven from the gear n<SP>1</SP>. When the power units are used singly the unit not in use is freely rotated. Two sets of power drives as above described may be used side by side for driving a pair of ship's propeller shafts.
