674,756. Change-speed and reversing gearing. PERRY, J. B. Aug. 11, 1950 [Aug. 11, 1949], No. 20867/49. Class 80 (ii).. Gearing giving four speeds forward or reverse comprises bevel gears 11, 12. fast on a driving shaft 1 and meshing with bevel gears 13, 14 loose on the lower part of an inclined lay shaft 2, and bevel gears 27, 28 loose on the upper part of the lay shaft 2 and meshing with bevel gears 44, 45 formed on a member 43, the gears 13, 14 being adapted to be selectively connected to the shaft 2 by a slidable toothed clutch member 21 with friction synchronising means 20 and the gears 27, 28'being adapted to be selectively connected to shaft 2 by a slidable toothed clutch member 32 with friction synchronising means 31. The member 43 is connected to the final driven shaft 3 through epicyclic reversing gearing comprising planets 42 carried by a sleeve 38 and meshing with a gear annulus 48 in member 43 and with a sun 36 fast on shaft 3, the sleeve 38. being adapted to be'connected to shaft 3 or to casing. 4 by a. slidable toothed sleeve 39 so as to give forward or reverse drive. Alternatively, the gears 13, 14, 27, 28 may be fast on shaft 2 and gears 11, 12 and 44, 45 being adapted to be selectively connected to shaft 1 and member 43.
