Abstract

936,904. Variable speed gear. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. March 30, 1962, No. 12459/62. Class 80 (2). A variable speed gear comprises a first input shaft 5 fast with one element 13 of a planet gear a second element 9 of which is fast with an output shaft 7, and a second input shaft 6 which is selectively connectable to a third element 15 of the gear or to the output shaft 7 by-passing the planet gear. As shown, the planet gear is a simple sun-ring train 15, 11, 12 but may be a bevel planet train. The second input shaft 6 is clutched at 18, 19 to a pinion 20 which meshes a pinion 26 fast with the sun gear 15 for high output shaft speed. For low speed drive the output shaft 7 is driven from the input shaft 5 through the planet gear, the sun 15 of which is held against reverse rotation by a one-way detent 29 and from the input shaft 6 through a one-way clutch 24 and gears 24, 28. The ratio of the gears 24, 28 is identical with the ratio of the planet gear when its sun 15 is stationary. If the drive to one of the input shafts fails during high-speed drive the other input shaft automatically drives the output shaft 7 at the lower speed. Specification 881,313 is referred to.
