Abstract

527,629. Variable-speed gearing. STURMEY-ARCHER GEARS, Ltd., and BROWN, W. March 9, 1939, No. 7595. [Class 80 (ii)] In an epicyclic change-speed gear for cycles of the kind in which both the driving members o and the driven member h are adapted to be coupled selectively and at the same time one to an annulus l and the other to a planet carrier c or both to the same part, the planet carrier is made in one piece and houses coupling means for the driven member and the planet pinions which are supported on floating pins d' supported at each end. The planet carrier c is supported on a cap h and the sun wheel b mounted on a fixed shaft a. The pinions d are held in slots in the carrier c and secured by the pins d<1> positioned by an abutment d<2>. Ratchet pawls j' secured by floating pins k are positioned by a flange c<2>. The driving member o carries long teeth o<2> engaging a dog r' axially moved by a selector rod q. The annulus l engages the planet pinions and carries pawls m' engaging the driven member h and two sets of circumferentially offset dogs l<1>, l<2>. When the dog r' is in engagement with the dog l<2> it disengages the pawl m<1> from the driven member h. For direct drive the dog r<1> drives the dogs l<1> on the annulus l and the pawls m<1> rotating the member h, the pawls m<1> overdriving the pawls j. For high gear the dogs r engage planet carrier parts d' and rotate the annulus l and pawls m<1>, For low gear the dogs r engage dogs l<2> on the annulus and the dogs r' put the pawls m<1> out of action, the drive being through the planet carrier c and the pawls j'.
