Abstract

576,610. Variable-speed gearing. BIRMING- HAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd., and NEEDHAM, V. E. Sept. 6, 1944, No. 16991. [Class 80 (ii)] A three speed gear, particularly for cycle hubs, comprises a simple epicyclic train which is moved bodily in an axial direction to effect speed ratio changes. Planet pinions 33 in a cage 31 mesh with a long sun pinion 3 cut in a solid fixed axle 1. Dogs 37, 39, on the cage 31 engage dogs 15, 29, respectively, on the driving member 7 and driven hub 21 when the gear train is in its end positions. In the normal speed position shown, long dogs 65 on the toothed annulus 35 engage the dogs 15 and also dogs 23 on the hub 21. Movement of the train to the right to engage dogs 15, 37, and disengage dogs 15, 65, give an overdrive, whilst movement of the train to the left to engage dogs 29, 39, give a low speed ratio. The gear. train is actuated by a rod 59 carrying a cross-pin 49 engaging a sleeve 45, movement of the rod 59 to the right being transmitted through a spring 47 to a sleeve 43 connected to the cage 31. In the other direction the movement is effected by a spring 55.
