Abstract
674,170. Reversing gearing; clutches. LANGDON, A. G. April 11, 1950 [March 3, 1949; March 3, 1949], Nos. 5860/49 and 5862/49. Class 80 (ii). A combined clutch, reverse and reduction gearing comprises a driving shaft 2 with a pinion 4 engaging a reduction gear wheel 5 freely mounted upon a driven shaft 7. Friction plates 19, 21 are arranged between a housing 6 attached to the gear 5 and a bush 20 secured to the driven shaft 7 so that when this clutch is engaged the gear 5 drives the shaft 7 directly. The gear 5 has also secured. to it a bevel gear 10 of an epicyclic train which co-operates with planet gears 17 on a carrier 13, which planets also engage a second bevel gear 18 secured to shaft 7. When the clutch 19, 21 is engaged this bevel train rotates solid with the shaft 7 but if the clutch is disengaged and the carrier 13 held by a brake band 29 a reverse drive is imparted through the bevel gears to the shaft 7. The clutch and brake are adapted to be operated alternatively by a single lever 26 with a neutral position in which no drive at all is transmitted. The clutch 19, 21 is actuated through pins 23 in an adjustable end wall 22 of the housing 6 by cams 24 and a sliding sleeve 25, and balls 28 operate in 'inclines between a ring 27 and the pressure plate to increase the clutch pressure and prevent slip. A modified arrangement utilises a spur gear epicyclic train instead of the bevel train and has interconnected planet pinions co-operating with two sun gears.
