Abstract
669,181. Epicyclic gearing. ROLLINSON, E. W. (Hupp Corporation). Jan. 18, 1950, No. 1307/50. Classes 80 (i) and 80 (iii). [Also in Group X] Vehicle window-operating mechanism including both a handle 10 and reversible electric motor 32 respectively coupled to the operating gearing through a uni-directional spring clutch 11, 15, 17, and a plate clutch 35 and allowing for separate' or simultaneous operation comprises a sun gear 18 integral with lugged segment 17 of the spring clutch, another sun gear 22 attached to a worm wheel 23 meshing with a worm 24 on the motor shaft, and intermeshing planet gears 20, 21 mounted on pins 25 on a carrier 26 integral with a shaft 27 having a gear wheel 28 which drives the window operating gear or quadrant 30. During automatic operation, the motor rotates sun wheel 22 through the worm and worm wheel and this reacts through the planet wheels against the locked sun wheel 18 to rotate the carrier, shaft 27, and the operating gear; sun gear 18 is locked by spring 15 expanding against its housing when surfaces b of clutch segment lugs 17' contact sides d of hooks 14 on the spring. For manual operation, movement of the hand crank causes lugs 13 of clutch segment 11 to engage the inner sides b of the spring hooks to contract the spring, the drive being transmitted through lugs 17'. Rotation of sun wheel 18 causes the planet wheel to move round sun wheel 22 locked by the worm, and so effect rotation of the carrier and shaft. The spur wheel gearing may be replaced by bevel gears. Another modification comprises one or more planet gears carried on an arm or spider secured to the operating shaft and engaging both a sun gear coupled to the hand crank and another sun gear in the form of a ring toothed internally to engage the planet wheel and externally to engage the motor-driven worm. The motor and differential coupling may be mounted separately from the manual driving elements, the coupling shaft and manual operating shaft being connected by sprockets and chains.
