631,830. Toothed gearing. HOUPLAIN, R. B. May 6, 1947, No. 12252. Convention date, May 10, 1946. [Class 80(i)] A driving means such as an electric motor 6, Fig. 2, drives an output member 2 through a locking device 7 of the kind to which Specification 482,091 relates and through epicyclic gearing 4, 41, 3, of which the reaction member 4<1> is held stationary as by a second like locking device 71 the retaining member 12 of which is stationed by a brake having frictionfaced pivoted segments 10, Fig. 3, spring-loaded to engage the element 12. Upon stoppage of the motor 6 the member 4 is coupled to the stationary flange of the motor, acting as the detent element of the device 7, and the output member 2 is locked against rotation unless the member 41 is operated by an auxiliary drive handle 8 or, in the case of a reactive load, the spring loading on the brake is decreased to allow slip. In Fig. 1 (not shown) the brake is dispensed with, the detent element of the locking device 71 being permanently stationed. In Fig. 4 (not shown) there is no auxiliary drive, the member 4<1> being connected directly to a brake. The bevel gearing shown may be replaced with spur gearing in which a planet carrier rigid with the output member supports pairs of planets of which each pair is secured to the same shaft and meshes driving and reaction annuli.
