Abstract
633,056. Belt gearing. CHERRY TREE MACHINE CO., Ltd., and DOWELL, G. July 4, 1945, No. 17019. [Classes 80 (i) and 80 (ii)] In a transmission system planetary pulleys are arranged to be cyclically engaged and disengaged with the belt by rotation of the pulley carrier which is positively rotated by a member associated with the belt, at least one of the planetary pulleys being in driving engagement with the driven shaft. A driven shaft b has a sun wheel b<1> rigid therewith and meshing with gears c<2> rigid with planetary pulleys cl carried by the carrier c. The driving pulley a<1> is connected to the pulleys c<1> by a belt d tensioned by a jockey pulley e, rigid with which is a gear el meshing with a second gear e<2> which drives the planet carrier c. In modifications the planets c<1> may drive the shaft b at different speeds by varying the size of the gears c<2>, or in the reverse direction through the interposition of idler gears. The arc of contact of the belt d may be varied by the use of a second jockey pulley to provide an intermittent rotation of the driven shaft at different speeds and in different directions of rotation, as is shown in Fig. 7 where three of the planetary pulleys are used, two to provide different speeds during their driving period and the third to provide a reverse drive through the idler gear c<4>.
