Abstract

695,671. Gyroscopic apparatus. VOIGT, R. July 14, 1951, No. 16759/51. Class 97 (iii). [Also in Group XXIV] In an epicyclic gear of the kind wherein variable reaction is obtained from the gyroscopic effect of two oppositely-rotating masses 20, 21 which are turned end-over-end to that the transmission is automatically torque and speed responsive, the mass 21 rotates substantially within the mass 20 and each mass has hub bearings 15 and rim bearings 24, 25, the rim of one mass bearing on the hub of the other. A shaft 1 drives a shaft 12 through an external epicyclic train having a driving annulus 2, reaction sun 4, and planets 3 on a driven carrier 10 which is directly connected to the shaft 12. The sun 4 is connected to a rotatable housing 8 forming a carrier for planetary gears 17, 16 which engage a bevel gear 26 secured to the driven shaft 12. In a modification the external epicyclic train is dispensed with and a single epicyclic train forms a gear coupling wherein the driving and driven shafts each carry a bevel gear ring engaging stepped planetary gears mounted on the shafts of interrelated gyroscopic masses.
