Abstract
687,185. Variable-speed gearing. SOC. AR.L. SEBAL. Dec. 22, 1950 [Dec. 29, 1949], No. 31222/50. Class 80 (ii). A progressively variable ratio gear comprises a pair of balance gears the planet carriers of which are fixed to the driving and driven shafts, pinions fixed to each side wheel and meshing to form a pair of trains of different ratio, and means for progressively braking one pinion to vary the gear ratio. As shown the side plates 4, 5, 10, 11 are fixed to meshing pinions 6, 8 and 7, 9 of different ratios. An input shaft 1 drives the planet carrier 2 and an output shaft 14 is driven by the planet carrier 13. A centrifugal pump 18 housed in a liquid container 19 is driven through gears 15, 16 from the pinion 7. A valve 22 controls the pump outlet and hence the braking torque on the pinion 7 and the velocity ratio of the gear. The valve 22 may be controlled automatically by a regulator operated by the transmission.
