784,754. Variable-speed gearing. ROSTRON, R. J. March 16, 1956 [March 22, 1955], No. 8355/55. Class 80 (2). Gearing stated to vary automatically with load comprises two bevel epicyclic gears 5, 13, the planet carriers 4, 14 of which are bevel-geared to input and output shafts 1, 37 respectively, while the sun 11 of gear 5 is connected to the corresponding sun of gear 13 through reducing gearing 19, 23, 29, 33, e.g. of ratio 100 to 1, and the other sun 12 of gear 5 is connected to the other sun of gear 13 through reducing gearing 20, 24, 30, 34 of higher ratio, e.g. of ratio 105 to 1. According to the Provisional Specification, the planet carrier of a bevel epicyclic gear drives, and the two suns are geared one to the planet carrier and the other to the planet pinion of a two-element spur epicyclic gear, the sun of which is driven. Reverse may be obtained by braking the drive to the spur planet pinion.
