Abstract

958,652. Variable-speed gear. MASSEY-FERGUSON SERVICES N.V. Oct. 5, 1960 [Nov. 9, 1959], No. 34231/59. Heading F2D. A tractor drive includes a three-element epicyclic gear controlled by an expanding- pulley gear 40, 41, the sunwheel 50 being geared to the engine-driven input pulley 40 and the annulus 51 to the output pulley 41. The planets consist of intermeshing pinions 52, 53 gearing with the sunwheel and annulus respectively and the planet carrier 54 is connected to a reversing epicyclic train 61 driving the final output shaft 66, forward drive being obtained by engagement of a disc clutch 67 and reverse by holding a band brake 68. As shown pulley 40 is driven from the engine flywheel 20 through a clutch 25 and pinions 27, 28, and pulley 40 drives sunwheel 50 through pinions 55, 56. Pulley 41 drives annulus 51 through pinions 57, 58 and a power take-off shaft 24 coaxial with driven pulley 41 is driven from flywheel 20 through pinions 22, 23. The continuously-variable gear is of the double belt and pulley type, the conical side discs of the pulleys 40, 41 being mounted on opposite sides of central discs and conjointly movable in the axial direction by hydraulic control units 43, 44. Other arrangements with the pulleys 40, 41 transposed and with modified drives to the power take-off are also described, Figs. 5 and 7(not shown).
