Abstract
927,418. Motor vehicle driving gear. P. P. RICHARD. June 12, 1961 [Aug. 12, 1960], No. 21115/61. Class 79(2) [Also in Group XXIV] A track-laying tractor has an engine supercharged by a compressor driven by a differential inserted between the engine and its load, the engine driving a torque converter through epicyclic gearing. By this means, a wide range of driving speeds can be obtained. In the Figure, the output shaft 2 of an engine 1 drives the planet carrier 3 of an epicyclic gear, the sunwheel 6 of which drives a supercharger 9 through gears 7, 8, while the ring gear 4 is connected to a useful output shaft 5. This shaft drives the planet carrier 10 of a further epicyclic gear, the sun wheel 12 of which is connected to a shaft 16 driving the vehicle endless track mechanism. The ring gear 11 drives the impeller 15 of an hydraulic torque converter, the turbine 13 of which is connected to shaft 16. Driving of the supercharger by the first epicyclic gear enables the engine to drive shaft 5 at full power within a speed range with a maximum about two and a half times the minimum. The second epicyclic gear and torque converter arrangement permits the ratio between the speeds of shafts 5 and 16 to vary by a factor of about 1À6 in dependence on the load so that the speed of shaft 16 may vary between a maximum of about four times the minimum, in dependence on the load, and manual changespeed gearing is unnecessary.
