Abstract
809,863. Driving auxiliary apparatus. BORG-WAJRNER CORPORATION. May 15, 1956 [May 16, 1955], No. 15078/56. Class 79(2) [Also in Group XXIV] In a change-speed gear (see Group XXIV) for a heavy motor vehicle, which provides three reduced ratios, direct-drive and reverse by a series arrangement of a four-element planetary train 15 and a three element one 20, which ratios may, if desired, be doubled by the addition of an auxiliary two-speed planetary output gear, the planet-carrier 59 of the second train 20 has a power take-off wheel 61. This is idle in neutral and reverse and is driven by the engine (through a fluid coupling or torque converter 14) at the first reduction ratio of the first train in first ratio; at the second reduction ratio of the first train in second ratio, and at engine speed in third and fourth ratios. In each case drive is through the torque converter 14 although in a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the third ratio is all mechanical, by-passing the converter, and is hydromechanically torque split in fourth.
