Abstract

[Also in Division F2] In a driving and steering mechanism for a motor vehicle having endless tracks or wheels disposed on opposite sides of the vehicle each driven through a planetary gear, a first input member of each planetary gear is driven by the vehicle engine at a speed bearing constant relation to the engine speed and a second input member of each planetary gear is driven by the engine through a continuously-variable changespeed device. As shown each endless track sprocket 14 is driven through gearing 13 by an output shaft 10 integral with the carrier 9 of planet pinions 11 meshing with an annulus 1 driven through gears 3, 4 by a shaft 5 carrying a pulley 6 coupled by a V-belt 7 to the engine crank-shaft. The planet pinions 11 also mesh with a sun wheel 16 carried by a shaft 15 driven through expanding pulleys 17, 18 and a belt 19 from a shaft 25 carrying a gear 26 driven by a gear 27 meshing with the gear 3. To vary the transmission ratio or to reverse the vehicle by simultaneously adjusting the driving ratios of both sets of the pulleys 17, 18 in the same sense a handle 32 (Fig. 3) on the steering column 34 in connected through a pinion 35 and racks 36, 38 to a pinion 39 carrying oppositely threaded elements 40 co-operating with nut members 41 engaging the adjustable plates 30 of the pulleys 18. To vary the driving ratios of the pulleys 17, 18 differentially for steering purposes a steering shaft 37 within the column 34 carries a pinion 43 engaging a rack 44 which displaces the pinion 39 and both nut members 41 axially in the same direction. A pulley 8 is mounted on the shaft 5 for driving auxiliary equipment. In another embodiment each planetary gear is a bevel differential and the adjustment of the expanding pulleys driving the second input member of each differential is effected by a wedge member eccentrically mounted on the steering shaft so that axial displacement of the steering shaft adjusts the drive ratio of the pulleys simultaneously in the same sense and rotation of the steering shaft effects differential adjustment of the drive ratio for steering. Alternatively the expanding pulley drives may be under individual manual control.
