Abstract

624,573. Variable-speed gearing. GALLET, L, Jan. 21, 1947, No. 1927. Convention date, Feb. 4, 1946. [Class 80 (ii)] A variable-speed gear comprises a three element spur planetary train having one element connected directly to the driven shaft and the other two members drivingly connected through helicoidal wheels by an expanding-pulley gearing, the driving shaft being formed by one shaft of the pulley gearing. The driven shaft 2 is rigid with the planet carrier 4 having planet gears 5 meshing with a sun gear 7, driven through a worm 14 and worm wheel 12 from the driving shaft, and with an annulus 9 rigid with a sleeve 10 driven through a second worm 15 and worm wheel 13 driven through the expanding pulley gearing from the driving shaft 16. The driving shaft 16 is extended into an oil-tight compartment 19 and carries the flanges 25, 26 of an expanding pulley, the flanges being slidable on a sleeve 20, mounted on the shaft, and keyed thereto by the keys 22 having claws 22a to impart longitudinal movement to the flange 25. The sleeve 20 is mounted through the ball bearing 28 in a ring 29 in screw thread connection with a support 30 rigid with the casing. Superimposed on the threads are worm-wheel teeth for engagement with a worm on a transverse regulating shaft 32. The shaft 17 is provided with another similar expanding pulley, the pulleys being connected by a belt 34 tensioned by a pulley 35. By varying the ratio of the'expanding pulley gearing the speed and direction of the driven shaft 2 may be varied. In a modification the sun gear is rigid with the driven shaft and the annulus and planet carriers with the sleeves 7 and 10 respectively.
