A variable-speed gear for motor cars comprises a driving shaft 1 fast with a carrier 2 supporting planet pinions 3 meshing a sun gear 5 and a ring gear 4 fast with a driven shaft 7, the sun gear and the ring gear being connected by a variable ratio gear which, in the form shown, comprises expanding pulleys and belts 10 ... 15. The overall ratio between the driving and driven shafts 1, 7 may be varied from a step-down ratio through direct drive to a step-up ratio.
