Abstract

579,285. Variable-speed gearing. SHAW, L. E. Sept. 16, 1943, No. 15208. Convention date, March 2. [Class 80 (ii)] In a combination of an epicyclic gearing with expanding pulley gearing a shaft 9 drives a planet carrier 63 through expanding pulleys 10, 15, 19, 40, a sun gear 69 on an extension 70 of the shaft 9 meshes with planets 68 and a sun gear 77 on the driven shaft 66 meshes planets (not shown) which interengage the planets 68. The pulleys 15, 19 are mounted on a countershaft 16 carried by a sleeve 23 pivoted to a bar 25 capable of up-and-down movement to vary the belt tensions, simultaneously with adjustment of the pulleys. The sheaves 12, 39 of the pulleys 10, 40 are axially slidable and are interconnected by a sleeve 36 which is engaged by a stem 46 on a rack 45. The latter is adjusted, by a handle 53 connected thereto by gears 51, 50, 49. A stem 34 on the sleeve 36 carries a roller 33 engaging a cam face 32 on the bar 25; thus, when the pulleys are adjusted the countershaft 16 is moved accordingly. Initial tension of the belts 14, 22 is adjusted by a screw 26 carried by the sleeve 23 and abutting the bar 25. The planet carrier 63 has cooling fins 80, the surrounding casing 60 having openings 81 for circulating air.
