Abstract

Operating or controlling clutches, expanding pulleys, and the like.-Expanding pulleys, friction clutches, &c. having an axiallyslidable, revoluble member such as 9, are operated by screw-and-nut and twin epicyclic gearing manually controlled. The member 9 abuts against a nut 12, which screws upon a part 7 of the pulley or clutch. Planet gears 22, 30 are loosely mounted independently on spindles 31 upon a loose carrier 26. The gears 30 mesh with teeth 29 on the screw 7 and with a fixed sun gear 28. The gears 22 mesh with a member 18 which has a slot 20 engaged by a pin 19 secured to the nut 12, and also with a sun gear 17 on a central sleeve 13. The sleeve 13 and gear 17 are normally stationary like the gear 28, so that the elements 7, 18 turn together at the same speed. When a control spindle 32 is turned by hand, the sleeve 13 is angularly displaced, and the gearing operates to turn the member 18 and nut 12 relatively to the screw 7, and so slide the element 9 and change the effective diameter of the pulley, or engage or disengage the clutch, as the case may be. An arrangement of two pulleys operated in unison is described.
