Abstract
238,226. Arter, J., and Schelling, E. Aug. 7, 1924, [Convention date]. Variable-speed gearing comprises planetary friction elements 5, Fig. 7, which are tilted so as to roll upon a member 4 on different zones. A variable ratio can be effected between the speeds of any two of members 3, 4, and 7 while the third is held against rotation. The elements 5 may be conical as shown in Fig. 10, or complete spheres as shown in Fig. 17. In the last arrangement, the divided driving member 3 is opened out to vary the speed, the sphere 5 moving along the fixed internal cone 7 and always engaging the driven member 4. In the arrangement described with reference to Fig. 1, the fixed track 7 is flat and the driving and driven elements 3, 4 are moved axially to tilt the planets 5 and so vary the speed. The planets 5 are held in spaced relation by a loose ring 10. The drive passes from the element 4 to the driven shaft 2 through a screw 17 which coacts with a spring 9 to move the member 4 axially in such a manner as to vary the speed automatically with the load. The member 3 is moved axially so as to remain in gear by another spring 15 and screw 13. Manual control may be effected by turning a screwed collar 16. Modifications of the variable friction gear train are described.
