Abstract

214,634. Caretta, E. April 19, 1923, [Convention date]. Variable-speed friction gearing is contained in a drum 5 secured to a driving-shaft 1 the thrust necessary for the gearing being supported by the end plates 3, 4 of the drum. In the arrangement described, there is an epicyclic train 6, 7, 9, the speed of the element 9 being controlled by a non- epicyclic variable train 11, 14, 13. One end race-way 6 is secured to the plate 3. The other end race-way 21 is connected to the plate 4 by a castellated dished spring plate 25, Fig. 4, which maintains an axial thrust in the friction gearing. The carrier 8 of the planets 7 is secured to a driven shaft 2 in line with the shaft 1. The elements 9, 11 are upon a loose disc 10. Idle friction gears connecting elements 11, 13 of circular section are supported on a non-rotary spider 16. These idlers are adapted to be tilted to vary the speed and direction of motion of the shaft 2 by turning a screw 19 by suitable means Such as a sprocket 20. Between the elements 13, 21 there is a sinuous-cam connection 23, 24, Fig. 3, containing balls, which connection has the effect of producing an end-thrust upon the friction gearing proportional to the transmission torque.
