Abstract

Variable-speed epicyclic gearing formotorvehicles is operated by applying a brake to one of two or more sun-wheels, and a solid drive is obtained by frictionally connecting the brake pulleys to the annulus. The shaft O to be driven carries planet-pinions S<1>, S<11>, 8<2>, gearing with a driving- annulus C and with one of two sun-wheels D, E,. either of which can be held stationary by applying a brake to a corresponding pulley H', H<2>. If both pulleys rotate freely, no drive is imparted to the shaft O. To obtain a third speed, the pulley H<1> is moved to the left by a rod V, so that it presses the pulley H<2> against a conical surface on the annulus C; the gearing then rotates as a whole in fixed bearings A, B.
