Variable-speed friction gearing.-In a cone- and-roller gear using a grooved cone 6 on a countershaft 1 driven from the driving-shaft 2, a spring-pressed bar 35 is supported on spindles 36, 37 so as to be parallel to the surface of the cone 6 and holds the roller 33 on the driven shaft 21 up to the cone by means of a forked lever 47 and spherical roller 48 held between the bar 35 and an adjacent bar 49. The inner faces of these bars are grooved to provide a succession of seatings for the roller 48. The driven shaft is supported by three radius arms, one fixed to a rocking guide bar 18, and the others 22, 23 capable of sliding thereon to shift the roller 33. A direct drive may be obtained by means of a clutch 57 on the driving-shaft, and a slow reverse drive by means of a section 58 of the cone loose on the shaft 1 and geared to a loose wheel 65 which can be clutched to the shaft 1 as desired by means of clutch parts 66, 67. The countershaft 1 is driven from the driving-shaft 2 by a chain pulley 9 geared to the shaft 1 and carried in a swinging bracket 13 adjustable by a screwed rod 14.
