Abstract

363,985. Epicyclic variable-speed gearing. HALL, S. M. L., 34B, Clanricarde Gardens, and BEAUMONT, E. G. E., 20, Essex Street, Strand, both in London. July 24, 1930, No. 22313. [Class 80 (ii).] In automatic spur or bevel epicyclic variablespeed gearing in which the speed is controlled by the load, a carrier B supporting the planetwheels b is secured to the driving-shaft A and the annulus d to the driven drum D. The sun-wheel c is loose on the shaft and secured to eccentrics E, or to cams or cranks, adapted to actuate weights W which are either connected by links L to pivots m on the driving flywheel F or are carried on bell-crank levers pivoted to the flywheel. The oscillations of the weights impose a load on the wheel c to enable power to be transmitted to the drum D. In a modification, Fig. 13 (not shown), the eccentrics are secured to the shaft A and the weights are linked to arms secured to the wheel c. In a further modification, the constructions of Figs. 11 and 13 are combined, one epicyclic gear only being used. The weights W, Fig. 17, may be secured eccentrically on planet-wheels El, which are pivoted on the flywheel F and on a frame J turning therewith and engage a sunwheel e<1> secured to the sun-wheel c<1> of the main epicyclic gear c<1>, b<1>, d<1>, and, in a modification, Fig. 19 (not shown), the planets E<1> are carried in a frame secured to the wheel c<1> and the wheel e<1> is secured to shaft A. In a modification, Fig. 23, of the form shown in Fig. 17, the planets E<1> are carried in a loose frame J and gear with an annulus l<1> secured to the flywheel F, and in a modification of that shown in Fig. 19, the frame J is again free and the annulus l<1> is secured to the wheel c<1>. In place of using carrier frames, the outer surfaces of the weights may be made concentric with the planets E<1> and engage with inner tracks on the annulus and with rollers concentric with the shaft A. The throw of the eccentrics may be adjusted by axially-sliding wedges or they may float under the control of springs and hydraulic pressure acting through restricted passages so as automatically to adjust themselves as the thrust or pull of the weights varies. A reversing gear may be employed in series with the apparatus.
