Abstract

344,065. Variable speed gearing. HAYES, F. A., Middletown, New Jersey, U.S.A. Sept. 2, 1929, No. 39227/30. Convention date, May 7, 1929. Divided on 343,988. [Class 80 (ii).] Variable-speed gearing comprises torus discs and correlated sets of precessional rollers arranged for planetary revolution. In the Figure are shown twin sets of rollers 19, 50 supported upon spiders 25, 55, respectively, which are connected by a sleeve 13a, the rollers engaging torus surfaces connected in pairs. The end discs 10, 11 are keyed to driving-shaft 12 and the double middle disc 15 is loose and adapted to be held by a brake 72 to engage the drive, as described in Specification 344,063. The two sets necessarily precess in unison, and the load is divided between them, as described in Specification 344,064. Forward drives are taken from a ring 56 surrounding the second set of rollers 50 by a clutch drum 75 which slides on driven shaft 63. The axes of rocking of the rollers are inclined to the planes of the discs as described in Specification 344,061, so that the gearing is torque-responsive and control can be superposed by a slider 46 connected to the rollers 19 of the first set. The rollers 19 are supported between rockers 28 pivoted on the spider 25, as described in Specification 344,062, and the load on individual rollers is equalized by a connecting floating ring 35, as described in Specification 344,064. The rollers 50 are supported between rockers 54, and floating load-equalizing ring 56 surrounds the train. The control slider 46 acts by producing relative angular displacement between the spider 25 and ring 35. This is done by bowls 41 coacting with cams on elastic drums 39, 37 connected to the elements 25, 35, respectively. The driveengaging brake 72 and the speed control slider 46 may be operated by the automatic hydraulic control mechanism described in Specification 344,066, and the twin planetary gears may be caused to turn solid by a clutch 78 as described in Specification 343,988. Reversed driving is effected by moving a rod 68 manually, which connects disc 15 to the driven shaft 63 and causes the roller spiders 25, 55 to be arrested by brake 72, as described in Specifications 343,988 and 344,063.
